Nexium Vs. Naxiprazol

A while back, I was prescribed to take Nexium

14, 20mg, tablets that sells somewhere between KD7.500 -8.500

While I was in Syria I realized that I had forgotten to bring in a new box, and was left with a couple of tablets only for a 12-days period. I headed to one of their local pharmacies and was given the Syrian version of Nexium, which is called Naxiprazol

20, 20mg, tablets that sells for SYP110 (which is close to  600 fils!!!!)

He said the foreign make of the same medicine is SYP800 (around KD4.600) which is like half the price of the one in Kuwait!!!

After I tried it for few days, same effect and no problem, I went ahead and got few boxes with me back home. Question is, is it really the same? Should I take it with me on my next doctor visit and ask? I have no complaints so far! I am just questioning the price difference!!

Oh and I like the fact that the prices are PRINTED on the boxes of their medications so its fixed all over the city 😉

  1. I think not all med. Are the same but like in egept ull find the original med. With 1/4 the price that we have in kuwait &the one they made it there is even less…. Ask the doc. Because when i asked my kids doc. He adviced me to use the original one

  2. It’s a fact that medication in the Middle East such as Syria, Jordan and even Egypt is much much cheaper than Kuwait. My mum always gets her diabetic pills whenever she’s traveling somewhere close. Names can change, but as long as they have the same ingredients then you’re ok, am sure the pharmacist wouldn’t have given it to you if it wasn’t the same, don’t worry 😀

  3. i think u gotta ask ur doctors advice first before taking any meds….

but anyways u have taken it already, next time u visit ur doctor u gotta ask bout it…(*wink)

    tc

  4. its like panadol and panamol 😛 they have the same effect. il 3asha 3alaich 2day?

  5. You’re asking if you should save KD4 and go with a knock off version of a medicine instead? Would you replace your cars brake pads with knock offs? Your iPhone with a fake Chinese one? Your Michelin tires with fake Misheleens? Your health is worth more than KD4. It’s not worth the risk at all I would stop taking these knock offs right away.

    • You are not comparing apples to apples 😉

A lot of medications in bioclinic (local mustawsif) and government hospitals use cheaper medications produced in the region but with the same composition! No one is complaining!

Of course I care about my health! Of course my health is worth way more than KD4!

All Im saying that they can be the same… plus, Kuwait is known to have higher prices for meds anyways

  6. i would continue with Nexium, not the cheap Syrian stuff. I’m pretty sure pharmaceuticals are not as regulated in the Middle East as they are in the West. Even with that we regularly hear reports of contamination, so imagine what it must be like in Syria or Egypt.

  7. Is this for weight loss? Does it work?

  8. I am a pharmacist and its the same medicine but with different brand thats all. Some patients will feel difference in effect between brands most of it pshycological. If u feel the syrian brand goes well with u, u can continue with it.
And about the price difference in the same brand between egypt and kuwait, its because of the market size. Here in kuwait they will order less amount of the medicine than in egypt so the main company will charge kuwait more for the fewer quantities ordered from them.

  9. Mark
U can not compare medicine to fake electronics or tires!!!
Because even if the medicine is produced in syria or kuwait the meficine follows a very strict steps and conditions and regulated by worldwide laws and it should pass the quality control test that recognised by FDA and international medicine laws.
Some patient may goes well with replica brand even better than the original brand. Each human have diffrent reaction and response to medicines

  10. Nexium & Naxiprazol are the same. They have the same active ingredient (esomeprazole). It is cheaper because it is locally manufactured. But in general, drugs in Kuwait are double or even triple their prices in other neighboring countries. We usually get our medications from Saudi, you can get the real McCoy for half or at least 30% off the price in Kuwait.

    • Yeah… even when I was in Spain, I got a medication with esomperazole and it worked just fine for me 😀

And I was told we have higher prices here anyways! Even in the post, I mentioned that the original one in Syria is like half the price of the original one in Kuwait so that should tell us something 😉

    • Hahaha both Arabic and English welcomed here – no wrries

E wallah ana wel nexium kawwanna sadaqa kolama wadda3to wa7edan menhom, ja-aa man yobdi eshtyaqah 😛

Fikritik 7ilwa to buy the 40 and break it into half! Nice move. Bes Ana bawadi el medication ma3ay to my doctor and lets see what he says 😉

  12. the Syrian pharmacist was right in giving you the local version. in the pharmaceutical industry (yes there is such a thing), laboratories will have exclusive rights on certain molecules until a certain period of time….just enough time for them to exploit the molecule to its most and sell them at the most expensive rate and try to kill off competitor laboratories
usually competing laboratories would have 2 slightly modified molecules which have the same effect on the human body and each laboratory or in other words company would market their molecule under a different name and compete against each other with better glossier marketing campaigns and a better more aggressive sales force which will manage to convince a bigger number of doctors to prescribe their drug/medication instead of the competitor’s

now once the exclusivity time is over smaller, more local laboratories have the right to copy that same molecule and sell it at a much cheaper price under either a different name or simply using the molecule’s name (like Penicillin as a name for a generic antibiotic drug). sometimes even these big laboratories themselves manufacture these cheaper un-branded versions just so that they can tap into this very big section of the market.

have you never seen not too fancy looking pain killers with the simple names of Paracetamol, Aspirin or Ibuprofen? these are the main molecules used in all branded pain killers (to name a few Panadole, Fevadole, Tylenol, Advil, Excedrin,)….you can either fall for the marketing trap and feel “safer” when using a pain killer with a brand or be smart and just buy the generic version that just has the main molecule.
Just to note you will feel a certain branded pain killer works better on you than another branded pain killer because of the other additions in that drug (sometimes Caffeine sometimes an anti-inflammatory molecule, sometimes something else)…..so you’d feel that your headache goes away faster with let’s Say Excedrin than with Advil…….its true its not a trick or a placebo, depending on each person a certain molecule will work better on you than another.

so i say use the “knock-offs” as it is the exact same molecule and it will therefor have the exact same chemical effect on your body . this will not only help your wallet , it will also support the smaller laboratories break apart the big monsters of the Pharmaceutical industry (Pfizer, Novartis, Bayer, Sanofi-Avantis to name a few)

    and salamtek 🙂

    • WOW! I really appreciate you taking the time to write this all to me… exactly my point! Just different names! And as I said before, even the “foreign” one in Syria (which is the one I got from Kuwait) is cheaper… Medications here are more expensive overall and differ from one pharmacy to another!

Again thanks for your comment and allah yesalmik!

Will double check with my doctor anyways!

  13. not a problem, I’m sure your doctor will tell you the same thing 😉

it just annoys me when some people say that I don’t trust medicine made in X, Y or Z country. as long as the molecules used in them are the same than there is no need to ditch the local versions (I strongly disagree with Abu Fulan, medicine made in Egypt or Syria will work perfectly fine on anyone just as much as a branded more expensive molecule made in Switzerland or the USA).

its unfortunately some people’s retarded “Arabness” that will continue to kill our local industries. to them I would like to say that a Penicillin tablet made in Switzerland, Pakistan or Saudi Arabia will all manage to kill the same bacteria that has infected your moron lungs and it will give you the same smelly diarrhea as a side effect 🙂
