On June 19th 1961, Kuwait became fully independent following an exchange of notes between the United Kingdom and the then Amir of Kuwait, Sheikh Abdullah AlSalem AlSabah, which ended the British protectorate status of Kuwait.
In May of 1964, the decision was made to change the celebration of Kuwait’s Independence Day to be on February 25th instead of June 19th, honoring Sheikh Abdullaj AlSalem AlSabah, whose rule duties began on February 25th 1950.
