Fasting

July 6, 2009 · 8 Comments

While fasting in the month of Ramadan is considered obligatory, Islam also prescribed certain days for non-obligatory, voluntary fasting, such as:

  • each Monday and Thursday of a week
  • the 13th, 14th, and 15th day of each lunar month – Alayyam Albeed
  • six days in the month of Shawwal, the month following Ramadan.
  • Ashura Day (10th of Muharram in the Hijri calendar), (Only Sunni Muslims fast on this day. In Shia Islam it is prohibited.)

And fasting is forbidden on these days:

  • Eid Fitr (1st Shawwal) and Eid Adha (10th Dzulhijjah)
  • Tashriq (11th, 12th, 13th Dzulhijjah)
  • Arafat Day (9th of Dhu al-Hijjah in the Hijri/Lunar Islamic calendar) for those in Hajj

Now I am going to talk about Alayyam Albeed, which literally translates to the White Days simply because those nights are bright because of the moon light (they occur on the 13th, 14th, and 15th day of each lunar month = full white moon). Observance of fasting those three days is considered more meritorious :-)

Today is Rajab 13th and I am fasting all three days *crossing fingers*…. plus, why not consider this as Ramadan warm-up ;-)
